At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these national projects.
